This Empowering Reason This Stila Lipstick Shade Is Selling Out

On June 26, 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old candidate for New York’s 14th Congressional District, defeated 10-term incumbent Representative Joseph Crowley. Many are calling the election a shocking political upset; if the Bronx-born Latina woman beats Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November midterm, she’ll be the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives. We’re still not over the candidate’s impressive victory, but Twitter added just one more reason to root for Ocasio-Cortez: her lipstick of choice. The candidate just revealed the exact lipstick shade she wore to the Democratic Primary Debate, and it’s a classic power red with historical significance.

The politician took to Twitter to answer the “many inquiries” she received on her preferred color. “I GOT YOU,” she wrote, adding that it’s none other than Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso ($22). It’s hard to not find some symbolism in the brick red shade, as suffragettes in the early 1900s wore the hue while protesting for women’s right to vote. In 1912, the real-life Elizabeth Arden even handed out a similar lipstick to NYC marchers as a token of unity.

Soon after Ocasio-Cortez revealed her scoop, Beso sold out on Sephora . (It’s still available at other retailers like Nordstrom and Stila’s own site .) There’s undoubtedly more to focus on than Ocasio-Cortez’s makeup preferences – her platform supports Medicare for all, abolishing ICE, expanding LGBTQ+ rights, and creating an assault weapons ban – but it’s empowering to see her repping such a storied lipstick color. Just as marching suffragettes united in the hue 106 years ago, women have responded to the original tweet in solidarity.

Here's How I Wore Colorful Highlighter Every Day For a Week

With the popularity of highlighters soaring, many brands are starting to come out with unique hues that differ from the more common champagne shades that dominate the shelves of beauty stores.

After seeing a few orange, hot pink, and purple highlighters, I wanted to give the shades a try but wasn’t sure where to start. I headed to the Sephora Beauty Insider Community for some product recommendations and picked out a few of my own to wear for a week.

What I learned was pretty encouraging. Most of the hues are more wearable than I expected, but there are tricks to wearing each hue. Shop the products ahead and find out how to pull off orange, pink, and even rainbow hues.

Have You Heard? Watermelon Is This Summer's Hottest Skincare Ingredient

Summer is watermelon season. The fruit is fresh, juicy, delicious, and filled with good-for-you ingredients. It’s also, as the name suggests, a serious hydrator. So it only makes sense that beauty companies would want to use watermelon and watermelon extract to give a serious boost of hydration to their beauty products. From sleeping masks to lip products and even foundation , we’ve rounded up the best watermelon-infused products that your skin will drink up. Keep reading to shop our picks!

The 9 Best Texturizing Sprays That Will Give You Model-Off-Duty Hair

If you’ve always been hesitant to try a texturizing spray on your hair, now is the time to branch out. Summer is great time to experiment with styles without the rain and wind that comes with Winter. Consider the product a marriage between dry shampoo and hairspray – it’s meant to revitalize and give your hair a little extra oompf if it’s lacking body.

Texturizing spray can be used throughout the day: in the morning to create volume, as a midday pick-me-up to give life to flat hair and even to smell nice (depending on the brand you get, they usually have a perfume-like scent). Just spray it all over (not just at the roots), scrunch or fluff your hair to define it, and you’re done. You won’t believe how much of a difference it makes – the thickness is visibly noticeable. Take a look at our favorite texturizing sprays and try one for yourself.

Photoshop-Free Ads Are 2018's Most Empowering Trend – See How Dove's Doing It

If you prefer your beauty ads unaltered and Photoshop-free, 2018 is quite the time to be alive. Not only are brands such as Madison Reed and Overtone forgoing digital touch-ups in their imagery, but other big names like CVS Pharmacy and Suave are calling out how absurdly unrealistic beauty ad standards are. Specifically, CVS began putting a “Beauty Mark” icon over all of its unretouched photos. Now Dove is following suit, launching its own “No Digital Distortion Mark.”

The skincare brand, which sells 60 bars of its ubiquitous soap every second , has been Photoshop-free since 2017, per its Self-Esteem Project . Dove has long been known for its many inspiring commercials, even enlisting the great Shonda Rhimes to direct the short films . As Marketing Director of Dove Amy Stepanian told POPSUGAR, “For more than a decade, Dove has been dedicated to inspiring a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

Reps for the brand hope that this No Digital Distortion Mark will empower women to be more savvy when it comes to spotting unrealistic media standards. “It will help identify reality and relieve some of the pressure women and girls can feel to look a certain way,” Stepanian said.

She went on to say, “We know that globally, eight out of 10 girls opt out of key life activities when they don’t feel good about the way they look.” Stepanian hopes that steps toward transparency will aid young women to develop a healthier relationship with their appearance so that “beauty can be a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

The Only Body Bronzers That Pass the Sex Test

“Need an excuse to have sex this week?” my cringe-worthy subject line to POPSUGAR’s 300+ staffers last week read. I was desperate; I needed more limbs – at least, more than the four I’ve got – to try the latest and greatest instant self-tanners and body bronzers . My only rule: volunteers must put the formulas to the elusive Sex Test.

You know, the X-rated version of an infomercial demo, where – instead of proving that apples, almonds, and chicken don’t stand a chance against your Slap Chop – you discover a landmine of one-day-only formulas that won’t smudge onto your partner’s leg at the first sign of sweat during horizontal tango. (Obviously, no on-screen show necessary.)

In any case, the response could have made crickets blush. (Shout-out to Chris from the copy-editing team for taking the bait; I appreciate you.) So I’ll say this loud, and I’ll say it proud: Ahead are the self-tanners that I can personally attest will leave your skin with a kiss of color, while ensuring that the actual kissing going on will not also ruin your white 300-thread count bed sheets – satisfaction, guaranteed.

The Secret to Emma Stone's Oscars Glow? A New Kiehl's Product!

Image Source: Getty / Steve Granitz

OK, Emma Stone , we see you at the Oscars looking fierce as ever in your satin Louis Vuitton pantsuit ! Last year’s best actress winner totally dominated the red carpet, oozing confidence and an overall badass vibe (which no doubt peaked during the brilliant shade she threw while presenting the award for best director ). But here’s one thing that you may have missed, no matter how long you stared at Emma’s all-over winning look: the fact that she debuted a new Kiehl’s product!

According to a rep for the brand, Emma’s makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, used this totally casual, normal night to showcase Kiehl’s Glow Formula Skin Hydrator, a moisturizer that promises to visibly improve your “natural glow” over time. It’s made with illuminating materials and antioxidant protection such as pomegranate extract, which provides hydration for 24 hours. That’s a whole dang day of great skin, y’all.

You could smear this all over your face as you would with any moisturizer, but Rachel chose to mix it in with Emma’s base, which happened to be Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in Gobi ($49). This made her foundation easier to blend while leaving behind a soft, dreamy dewiness.

The one catch? Kiehl’s Glow Formula Skin Hydrator ($38) won’t be available until May, but you can preorder it on the brand’s website and have it sent just in time for a vanity made clear by Spring cleaning.

Step Right This Way, Ladies: MAC's Newest Palette Is Inspired by Girl Power

In 2017, MAC released its hilariously but trivially named Basic B*tch Palette , but this year the brand will celebrate a very different type of woman. That’s because MAC dropped a MAC Girls Risk Taker Palette ($40), which celebrates badass beauty babes and on-point shadow looks all at once.

This bundle contains eight berry- and shimmer-tinted eye hues, along with one bronze-pink highlighter. We’re obsessed with Risky Business, an ultraviolet-gray mix; Fashion Fanatic, an attention-grabbing fuchsia; and Free Ride, a ’90s-esque muted mauve.

We’re also cheering for the palette’s packaging, which is decorated with bold florals and thin, orange-toned stripes. If you’ve tried any MAC Girls Personality products , you know that the charming palettes contain satiny, pearl-infused powders that glide over your skin like a goshdarn dream. This puppy is sure to be the talk of your vanity, so don’t take the risk of waiting to purchase this one.

Nicole Kidman's Oscars Hair Came Courtesy of This New H&M-Owned Beauty Line

If you haven’t shopped at & Other Stories , click on the link to the site, call in sick today, and cozy on up to a bona-fide fashion girl’s fantasy . The affordable brand, which is owned by H&M, offers trendy pieces that retail for under $200. Every item comes from three different ateliers based in Paris, Stockholm, and Los Angeles and features striking silhouettes that are both chic and cutting edge.

Until now, the brand has stuck with making clothes, but Nicole Kidman debuted its hair products at the 2018 Oscars. We feel confident enough to call it now: by the way Nicole looks, the line is going to become a beauty mainstay.

While looking like a literal present in her sealed-with-a-bow Armani gown , Nicole kept her hair sleek and sexy. Her uberstraight strands were a delightful contrast to the sweet dress, and the style came courtesy of four new items from & Other Stories.

Hairstylist Kylee Heath codeveloped the new line (which launches this Summer) and worked her magic on Nicole. She began by applying her Universal Blowout Lotion and Fullness Thickening Cream to Nicole’s damp strands. Then she combed through everything and used a Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($399) on its highest heat and speed settings. After that, Kylee added & Other Stories Fullness Volume Powder, which gave just a touch of volume around her client’s roots. Then, she straightened Nicole’s hair and topped off everything with & Other Stories Universal Hairspray.

So yeah, safe to say we’ll be heading straight for an & Other Stories store come Summer, so we can find our inner Nicole Kidman.

Soap & Glory Sells Lipstick, but Its New Ad Shows Women Are More Than Their Mouths

How does a beauty brand contribute to the #MeToo discussion? Soap & Glory just schooled us all. The drugstore favorite offers a full line of makeup, but it’s perhaps best known for its cheekily named lip-plumping product , Sexy Mother Pucker. To some, that might seem a little objectifying. After all, a woman’s pout isn’t just a vessel for lipstick. It’s also, you know, the thing she talks out of, and those words are powerful.

That’s why Soap & Glory’s latest campaign wants us to look past the aesthetics of a woman’s lips – and more into what she has to say. In an emotional ad shot during the LA Women’s March on Jan. 20, the brand set up a live stream spotlighting close-ups of women’s lips. All wore various shades of lipstick as they spoke about their hopes, dreams, struggles, and experiences ranging from growing up transgender to surviving an abusive relationship. The ad encourages women to raise their voices “whatever their shade of gloss” may be.

The #MoreThanLips campaign sheds a spotlight on Soap & Glory’s efforts to support She Should Run, a national organization that works to support women in politics. One specific goal of She Should Run is increasing the number of women running for office to 250,000 by 2030. Soap & Glory has said that it will donate $5 for any post tagged #MoreThanLips – so get hashtagging.

MAC Is Launching Throwback Lipsticks in '90s-Fabulous Colors, and We. Are So. Excited.

The dream of the ’90s is alive in MAC’s latest collection, which will have fans of the decade screaming in their hair claws . The brand has launched a Throwbacks collection that’s bringing sexy back – and by “sexy,” we mean all your old favorite lipstick and eye shadow shades like Marrakesh, Bronx, Uninterrupted, and Kid.

Even better? This line is part of the brand’s permanent collection, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on reuniting with all your OGs. On the lip front, Throwbacks includes matte, frost, and satin finishes, which are all in retro shades that belong in an episode of Friends. Sans one metallic – the duochrome bronze Spanish Fly – the lippies lie in the red or pink color family.

Natural is the name of the game for the eye shadows, which come in a range of tan, beige, and brown to channel that Alicia Silverstone no-makeup look. Read on to see everything you can shop online at MAC now or in stores on March 1 – which is aptly a Thursday, aka prime #TBT time.
