Photoshop-Free Ads Are 2018's Most Empowering Trend – See How Dove's Doing It

If you prefer your beauty ads unaltered and Photoshop-free, 2018 is quite the time to be alive. Not only are brands such as Madison Reed and Overtone forgoing digital touch-ups in their imagery, but other big names like CVS Pharmacy and Suave are calling out how absurdly unrealistic beauty ad standards are. Specifically, CVS began putting a “Beauty Mark” icon over all of its unretouched photos. Now Dove is following suit, launching its own “No Digital Distortion Mark.”

The skincare brand, which sells 60 bars of its ubiquitous soap every second , has been Photoshop-free since 2017, per its Self-Esteem Project . Dove has long been known for its many inspiring commercials, even enlisting the great Shonda Rhimes to direct the short films . As Marketing Director of Dove Amy Stepanian told POPSUGAR, “For more than a decade, Dove has been dedicated to inspiring a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

Reps for the brand hope that this No Digital Distortion Mark will empower women to be more savvy when it comes to spotting unrealistic media standards. “It will help identify reality and relieve some of the pressure women and girls can feel to look a certain way,” Stepanian said.

She went on to say, “We know that globally, eight out of 10 girls opt out of key life activities when they don’t feel good about the way they look.” Stepanian hopes that steps toward transparency will aid young women to develop a healthier relationship with their appearance so that “beauty can be a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

Attention: Your New Favorite Highlighter Is Hiding at Walmart

I wrote an article last month about people who abuse their highlighter. As a professional makeup artist, I have seen many people overdo it with their “glow,” and many were irate that I called them out on it. Even though in that article I spoke with disdain about people that highlight too much, the fact remains that I am in love with highlighter when used properly. There is nothing greater than finding the perfect product that accentuates your bone structure and shaves years off of your beautiful face.

I recently was in a store consulting with a makeup artist at a very high-end luxury makeup counter. I noticed that her highlighter was absolutely amazing and noted sadly that I would love to splurge on the high-end $80 highlighter from her brand, but it seemed overpriced. She raised her eyebrows in surprise and leaned in to tell me a secret. “I am not wearing this brand’s highlighter . . . don’t tell anyone. It’s Wet n Wild .”

I took a step back and stared at her glistening cheekbones again, to be sure that my well-trained professional eye was in fact seeing things properly. Yes, her cheekbones and face was glistening with a creamy glow that was just the right tone, texture, and shine. Admittedly, I have enjoyed some NYX and Maybelline items as a professional makeup artist, but I have not purchased or used something from Wet n Wild since my teen years.

She went on to tell me that the Wet n Wild MegaGlo™ Highlight Powder ($5) is available in seven gorgeous shades, each for less than you might spend on your daily latte. I could buy all seven and would be spending less than I normally do on one luxury brand highlighter or highlighter palette! The peachy gold shade that she was wearing was called Precious Pearls and is especially ideal for someone with an olive complexion, like her . . . and me. I was on a mission.

I headed to my local drugstore the next day to pick up my $5 “gold” and found that the shade was sold out. The next drugstore didn’t carry the line at all. A Google search revealed that Target carried the product, but was sold out in Precious Pearls in every store in my area, and the closest store that had it was a cool two hours away. All of this information only made me want my Wet n Wild highlighter more than ever.

Lo and behold, an internet search revealed that a Walmart just one town over from me had what I was looking for. Even then, I had to search. I carefully went up and down the cosmetics aisles three times before I found the Precious Pearls nestled inconspicuously amidst the other drugstore brands.

I scooped up Crown of my Canopy , which I intend to wear when I have a tan, as it is a more golden, richer version of the Precious Pearls. I grabbed Botanic Dream for those fairer-skinned clients that enjoy a pinkish-glow to their highlighter. And a real find – for those of you who are about to spend on the latest and greatest lilac-toned highlighter – the Royal Calyx shade. This light, purple-blue toned highlighter will keep you on trend without breaking the bank.

I have been wearing this product every day since I found it. I have received endless compliments, and I have noticed that my selfies look better than ever. There is just something magical about this highlighter. Part of it might be the price, but anyone who knows anything about highlighter can recognize a good one when they see it. The other day at the end of a long photo shoot, feeling tired and weary, I sat down outside, and a friend snapped my picture. None of my exhaustion was evident; instead I looked simply glowing and happy to be alive. I attribute this to my favorite new highlighter.

These products are the just the right amount of shimmery delight (without hard chunky glitter), and each one of the seven shades available are flawless. The textures are just the right amount of creamy without being too dewy or wet and surprisingly for just under five bucks, the packaging is quite delightful and luxurious with floral patterns baked into the product.

The glow can be applied with a fan brush or packed on with cream cheek brush, and it will never make you look like a glazed doughnut (unless you want it to.) I find that using a fan brush is best, as it allows you to gently apply the glow and gives you the control you need to add more product, without getting too shiny. I even had a client last week who is known for “abusing her highlighter” and was doubtful about my new find. I packed on several layers with my fan brush, and she was pleasantly shocked at how beautifully the product sat on her skin.

I always say splurge or get your thrills from items like mascara or lipstick that won’t put you in the red. Highlighter is something that is hard to find, and often you will find that you are willing to fork over $40 to $60 when you find just the right one. This $5 find from the drugstore won’t destroy your beauty budget, and your cheekbones will be the envy of all!

Meet CoverGirl Peacock Flare! The Newest Mascara In the Drugstore Family

According to Emmy-winning, celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor, there is nothing more disgusting than when your open beauty product slips out of your hands and falls onto the floor, exposing it to bacteria! CoverGirl is making sure this doesn’t happen with your mascara thanks to its brilliant new iteration. So, we proudly introduce: Peacock Flare Mascara ($8).

Let’s start with the packaging. In addition to the mirrored turquoise, peacock-inspired color and pattern, the cap features a rubber grip. It also has a curved shape for your fingers to grab onto, ensuring that bathroom crime scene is avoided. When I tested it, I definitely was able to pinch the cap more than a traditional round tub.

Onto the brush! The feather fan brush features alternating shorter bristles that spiral around. This is meant to help curl the lashes as you apply. The end result is a lush, flared-out look – hence the name, peacock. I found the curling feature to be effective, and I only needed a few coats to get some drama since the brush is pretty long. It was able to grab everything from my inner corners to edges at once.

The formula is also unique with a wax blend meant to add volume and resist smudging. It has lash-nourishing ingredients, including sea buckthorn extract, vitamins, and minerals. This gives it a creamy feel when applied, and I didn’t feel the need to use my usual lash primer.

And because CoverGirl just thought of everything this time, the brand is offering Peacock Flare Mascara in eight shades! Lookout for five levels of black: Extreme Black, Intense Black, Jet Black, Black, and Black Brown. There are also waterproof versions in Extreme Black, Black, and Black Brown.

If you need one more reason to #WANT this mascara, know that Ayesha Curry was just announced as the face of CoverGirl , and her first campaign is for Peacock Flare.

The mascara launches in November at drugstores and online, but you can see a first look here!

7 Amazing Ways to Save Money on Beauty Products at Target

Image Source: Flickr user Mike Mozart

Target is a go-to store for snagging everything from a last-minute outfit for a weekend getaway to a stash of paper towels. But if you’re a beauty enthusiast, your Target runs always involve stocking up on drugstore favorites from brands like L’Oréal and Essie. Plus, the options are endless from Up & Up, Sonia Kashuk, and Pixi, a selection of beauty lines that are exclusive to the superstore.

Ahead, we share insider shopping pointers (yes, we consulted with Target directly) to score the best deals on its beauty offerings. Go ahead and grab your notebook to take notes so your next trip down Target’s beauty aisles goes off without a hitch.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

If there’s a deal you’re after, get to your store as early as possible. The sale cycle begins on Sunday, so your chances of finding your item of interest in stock are higher if you visit early in the week. It also can’t hurt to purchase multiple backups of your favorite beauty goodies when they’re discounted so you’re stocked until the next promotion.

Sign Up For the Cartwheel App

If there’s one thing you should do before entering your local Target, it’s signing up for its Cartwheel App . Launched in 2013, the app lets you add dollar-amount discounts as well as offers typically between five percent to 25 percent off. And as if that’s not enough, it also includes manufacturers’ digital coupons.

You simply show the Target cashier your Cartwheel barcode at checkout to enjoy the discounts. The more offers you choose, redeem, and share with your Facebook friends, the more offer spots you’ll receive.

Tip: Scan the barcode of any item in a Target store to see if there’s an active Cartwheel offer. You’ll never miss out on any deals!

Stack Coupons

A smart Target shopper never forgets to practice coupon stacking. Put Cartwheel to work, but keep in mind you can also use any manufacturer coupons, Target store coupons (also available via mobile), and the five percent discount you receive with the Target REDcard all in one transaction.

Apply For a Target REDcard

Apply for the Target REDcard if you’re a frequent Target shopper. It’s available as both a credit and debit card which gets linked to your checking account and has no annual fee.

REDcard holders enjoy a five percent discount with every purchase in store and on, along with free shipping and an extended return policy.

Snag Gift Cards With Your Purchase

Target is notorious for offering gift cards, starting at $5, with select purchases. You typically have to buy multiples of one product or a specific combination of products to receive a gift card with your purchase. Learn which items are eligible for a gift card promotion by checking the weekly Target ad or online as well as signage on store shelves.

Price Adjustments Are Your Friend

Don’t worry if you’ve purchased a product only to find that it’s on sale at a competitor,, or the store’s weekly ad just a few days later. Not only can you request a price match at the time you purchase the product, but price adjustments are available 14 days after your purchase, too.

Save More With Subscriptions

How many times have you finished the last drop of your face moisturizer just as you’re about to apply your makeup for work? Eliminate that frustration by signing up for Target’s subscription service on to schedule exactly when you’d like an item delivered. The service offers everything from makeup to skin care products, and you’ll save five percent plus get free shipping on every order with subscriptions.

After Using This $5 Reddit-Famous Mascara, I Didn't Recognize Myself

In a results-driven beauty world, mascara tubes can often read like alcohol bottles. In my wild youth, I’d scavenge liquor stores for 101-proof whiskey (oh, how my liver aches just from the memory), but now my vice is “-proof” mascara. When it comes to lash lifting, products promise to be smudge-proof , sweat-proof , sleep-proof, and – oh yes – sex-proof .

In an era of such high-tech mascara, we can often forget the product’s original purpose: to make your lashes as sweepingly gorgeous as possible. This week, we got a beautiful reminder of what bare-bones, no-frills mascara can do, courtesy of reviews of a $5 cult product lurking in your drugstore aisle.

On Sept. 17, Reddit user EllieDaisyLouise created a thread celebrating her recent Essence Lash Princess ($5) purchase. The side-by-side comparison of her lashes with and without this product drew double takes from around the internet. The people needed to know: how the heck does a drugstore mascara do this?!

Can’t believe this mascara was only £3.30! Sorry for the shocking picture quality but this is the Essence Lash Princess mascara and I HIGHLY recommend it. from MakeupAddiction

As with any viral sensation, Lash Princess quickly drew more attention. Further reviews praised the tube , but others bemoaned it . In hopes of contributing to a healthy debate – and looking pretty while doing so – I decided to test it out for myself.

After requesting a sample of the mascara, I arrived at my office to see the tube on my desk. The first thing I noticed about it was its bodacious, eye-catching shape. If I was lazily perusing through an Ulta mascara aisle and saw this cheeky black-and-green tube with its crown design and (very trendy) fake-lace corset string-sealed cap , I would surely reach for it out of sheer aesthetics alone.

This mascara is truly the best thing to happen to swiping since Tinder.

The thin applicator confused me at first. How was I supposed to get next-level lashes via such a puny brush? I also noticed ample clumps lurking around the bristles, but they came off easily enough with a little scraping.

After seeing so much residue, I was a little nervous about sweeping it all over my lashes. I took a deep breath, applied it to my lashes, and . . . didn’t recognize myself! The amount of volume, after just one application, had completely transformed my lashes – and opened up my eyes.

With such dreamy results, I kept on applying it, over, and over, and over again. Each brush drew my lashes out even farther than before . . . the volume just wouldn’t quit. This mascara is truly the best thing to happen to swiping since Tinder.

This wand is not immune to clumpage, but it was nothing a quick touch-up with my fingers couldn’t fix.

When POPSUGAR Beauty Editor Kristina saw me from across the office, she said, “Those look SOOOO good!!” That is truly the response I aim for every time I enter a room.

While you’ll have to sacrifice some of the luxuries that come from a pricier option, like a fancy wand or shower-proof results, this product does not disappoint in the OG intention of mascara: to make your lashes look damn good. I also noticed that Lash Princess literally opens up my eyes to make them appear bigger. We’re talking straight Bambi status.

Since you’re supposed to throw out your mascara every three months, a drugstore option is truly the most economical one. I’ve always been a firm believer that you can be thrifty with your beauty purchases and still look good while doing so, and Lash Princess is further proof that I’m right. (Thanks for the ego boost, Essence!).
