How My Crochet Braids Shaped My Identity and Helped Me Find My Confidence

My hair and I have a complicated relationship.

Growing up, I never gave my hair the self-care it needed. I would tie it up into a ponytail, get relaxers on a daily basis, and refuse to use any product other than shampoo and conditioner (which also contained high levels of sulfate – a huge no-no for curls). Point blank, my hair was damaged and thick, and I didn’t take the time to learn how to maintain my natural type 3C hair .

The only time I experimented with my hair and gave it an ounce of care that it needed was when I had braids. Sometimes I would leave the house in my usual ponytail and return home with anything from cornrows to dutch braids. I never got a massive haircut or color, so this was how I felt bold.

Braids were a way for me to connect with others and feel confident. Then I started high school, and I started to push away from the familiar styles I grew up with to fit in. I stopped wearing the style for fear of being put into a box with only people that looked like me, while also believing I wasn’t “Latina enough” or “black enough” to embrace it in the first place.

I spent years during and after college trying to figure out my identity, which included embracing the features I once stripped away. I threw out all my hot tools, stopped getting relaxers, and finally put the ponytail to rest. I decided to give my curly, coil-y hair the love it deserved.

Still, braids were always in the back of my mind. This Summer, I looked around at the different styles, colors, and textures of braids and it gave me a wave of nostalgia. I started keeping a collection of inspiration from Instagram in hopes that I would find the courage to get my hair braided again.

However, I was anxious and nervous. Although I’m a woman of color, I feared I would misrepresent or squeeze my way into a community uninvited. The thought of wearing braids again, especially a newer style, made me feel like a fraud. Braids have been around as far back as 3500 B.C. from Africa as a sign of social status, unity, and simple pure art; yet time again, women of color, specifically black women, are scrutinized and judged for wearing braids or other natural looks.

So, I asked a trusted friend for her honest opinion. She put all my worries to rest, saying I shouldn’t feel judged, and even volunteered to give me crochet braids – a protective style that uses extensions (which can be hair, yarn, or thread) and loops it into your actual hair with a crochet needle. It’s also the perfect way to maintain my dense, curly hair in the hot Summer months.

While the braiding process itself was familiar to me, nothing prepared me for the finished look. I made my way into the bathroom and couldn’t believe what I saw in my reflection. It was me, yet I felt like a totally different person. Physically, my hair was longer, but mentally, it was a little deeper than that. I felt the same way my younger self girl felt when I got my hair braided by her friends. I felt beautiful, confident, and unapologetically me.

However, the big test was leaving the confines of my friend’s house and stepping into the real world. Once I headed to the train, I felt all eyes were on me. Maybe I was paranoid, but I felt like I was holding a big neon sign over my head that said, “Look at what I did!” Finally, I took a deep breath and lifted my head up high – because dammit, I felt good!

I spent the next three weeks with my braids and all the fears I had went away. I received countless positive remarks and compliments. My appreciation also grew for women of color who continue to be leaders of the natural hair movement and celebrate their braids in every shape and form. These women ignore society’s perception of what it means to have “good hair” and continue to highlight their culture – our culture. My crochet braids didn’t just provide me with a new look, but they also gave me the permission to be the person I’ve always been.

The 6 Sexy Fragrances to Wear If You Want to Get Laid This Summer

I left a recent POPSUGAR brainstorm meeting with one very intrepid assignment: pull a handful of new Summer perfumes out of our over-stuffed beauty closet, wear a new one each day, and see which scents get me laid. (It’s a perk of the job I’m sure my SO appreciates more than my dental plan or PTO.)

Over the course of a month, I meticulously tested the sexiness of countless fragrances – and found six that passed with flying colors. Keep reading to see the hands-down hottest smells of Summer, and get ready for honies to come out of the woodwork. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This CBD-Infused After Sun Lotion Is SO Good, I Cried When It Was Gone

If I were to write an honest Tinder bio for myself, one of my top interests would include, “Weeping like a lonely banshee.” At weddings, after emotional McDonald’s commercials , when I see babies on the street wearing little baby pants – the tears start streaming. And apparently, I also cry about spilled beauty products. When I accidentally dropped the Felix & Ambrosia Sunny Daze CBD Sun Cream ($40) all over my sink, I watched it run down my drain in horror.

You may have heard about that viral CBD-infused glitter sunscreen , which combines three things we really love over here at POPSUGAR – skin care, cannabis topicals , and ways to make your body glisten . Well, this after-sun lotion comes from the same brand, but I never thought I’d need it, seeing as how I am an SPF 50-wearing beauty writer who never burns.

My first rule of curing a sunburn would be to not get one, but if you do, I’d recommend smearing this all over your fine self.

Cue the narrator voice: “But Alaina would get sunburned.” Alas, after a lovely day spent frolicking on a Long Island beach, I came home as red as an overripe tomato. I took out the relief lotion, which has more of a liquid texture than thicker moisturizers. It’s fragrance-free, and glides on like a grease. I don’t love writing that products provide “instant” relief (it’s a bold claim), but within seconds, I felt my inflamed skin chill out a bit. With just one application in the morning and another before bed, I stopped feeling the heeby-jeebies of irritation. I even took a page from Madonna’s playbook and popped the bottle in the fridge. Applying the gel while it was icy-cold further soothed my skin. No glitter appeared, but that was OK with me. I’m shiny enough.

Everything was great until the fateful night I (drunkenly) knocked the entire bottle open. Luckily, this snafu occurred when my burn was very close to being healed. I’m sure that was in no small part to this lotion, which kept me from scratching my skin right off. My first rule of curing a sunburn would be to not get one, but if you do, I’d recommend smearing this all over. Just make sure you put the cap back on afterward.

How Legit Are "Cellulite Creams," Really?

Somewhere between Auguste Clésinger and the advent of FaceTune, cellulite came to be considered a full-blown affliction – with a past more decorated than Kensington Palace and enough so-called miracle creams to line its halls. But the truth is, the telltale lumps that affect up to 90 percent (!) of women – which don’t discriminate based on your genetics, weight, age, or skin color, if you can imagine such a notion! – are historically difficult to treat .

To better understand why, think of thigh dimples like the buttons on a couch cushion: these toggles, like the fat deposits you see on the area under your bum, have been pulled down, deep into the layers, to create puckers at the top. “What happens beneath your skin is a tethering of fibrous bands, which causes the dimples,” explained dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD. Now, do you really think rubbing a topical ointment on the surface of a sofa will change its overall structure? Of course not – and the same can be said about any body lotion claiming its organically farmed coffee beans from Costa Rica are the cure-all for bumps on your ass.

“None of these creams work permanently because that would require them to physically restructure the fibrous bands that connect to the underlying structure of your skin. There are no exceptions to this.”

To be clear: the caffeine found in most of these creams can have a temporary effect. “Caffeine can transiently make it better because it plumps the skin and masks the irregularity,” said dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, adding that gentle exfoliation boosts circulation, which yields similar results. It just won’t last more than a few hours, at most. “When you think about it logically, you will realize none of these creams work permanently because that would require them to physically restructure the fibrous bands that connect to the underlying structure of your skin,” Dr. Downie said. “Women are wasting their money, because no amount of caffeine will do anything to break apart the tethered fibrous bands. There are no exceptions to this. Expensive prices will not make the ingredients work better.”

But all hope is not lost! There are a few things you can do treat the area. “Anything that can restructure these fibrous bands would have to come from an [in-office] machine that can slice through the tethered band,” Dr. Downie said. Both she and Dr. Gohara recommend Thermitight , a micro-invasive device that uses radio frequency and heat to attack fatty pockets. “It is one of the best treatments on the market for cellulite,” she added. “I use this machine in my office constantly. There is some bruising and downtime – you also have to wear liposuction undergarments for two to three weeks after – and it is an expensive procedure, but my female patients are typically very happy with the results.”

Dr. Gohara also recommends Cellfina , an FDA-cleared in-office procedure that utilizes suction and a mechanical unit with a thin needle to cut the fibrous cords of connective tissue. It, too, leaves behind a trail of bruises, but she says it offers more promising results than creams. Maybe one day, gain will leave pain in the dust entirely. In the meantime, maybe you leave the exorbitant spending of things you don’t need to the royal family’s interior designer.

Jonathan Van Ness' Summer Cooling Hack Will Actually Change Your Life

Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness is the hero we never knew we needed. Hilarious, kindhearted, and unapologetically himself, he lights up the screen and warms our hearts with every episode . But between the quotable words of affirmation and the Instagram feed that makes you want to cheer , he’s an all-around grooming expert. And when the Fab Five appeared on the Today Show , he shared a Summer tip that just about blew our minds.

Basically, if you’ve just blown out your hair, the back of your neck can get sweaty, especially in the Summer. The last thing you want to do is ruin your gorgeous look, so Van Ness recommends dabbing a touch of peppermint or spearmint oil on the back of your neck, which will keep it cool for up to an hour. His exact pick? This Aveda Cooling Balancing Oil Concentrate. ($22) She comes in both an oil and a rollerball, so you can take her wherever you want and stay flawless on the go. Armed with this priceless tip, we can conquer Summer with our blowouts intact! All hail Queen JVN!

The Only Body Bronzers That Pass the Sex Test

“Need an excuse to have sex this week?” my cringe-worthy subject line to POPSUGAR’s 300+ staffers last week read. I was desperate; I needed more limbs – at least, more than the four I’ve got – to try the latest and greatest instant self-tanners and body bronzers . My only rule: volunteers must put the formulas to the elusive Sex Test.

You know, the X-rated version of an infomercial demo, where – instead of proving that apples, almonds, and chicken don’t stand a chance against your Slap Chop – you discover a landmine of one-day-only formulas that won’t smudge onto your partner’s leg at the first sign of sweat during horizontal tango. (Obviously, no on-screen show necessary.)

In any case, the response could have made crickets blush. (Shout-out to Chris from the copy-editing team for taking the bait; I appreciate you.) So I’ll say this loud, and I’ll say it proud: Ahead are the self-tanners that I can personally attest will leave your skin with a kiss of color, while ensuring that the actual kissing going on will not also ruin your white 300-thread count bed sheets – satisfaction, guaranteed.

This Silky Mineral Sunscreen Doesn't Leave a White Cast – and I'll Never Turn Back

Not to brag or anything, but I have pretty good skin. I frequently get complimented on my complexion, which I appreciate, especially because I work hard at keeping my skin healthy. Whenever I get questions from friends regarding what they can do for better skin, I always mention two cardinal beauty rules that I never break: don’t go to bed with makeup on, and always wear sunscreen.

My obsession with sunscreen is almost comical, and many of my friends look at me like a psychopath while I’m screaming at them for tanning. Despite my dogmatic sunscreen habits, I’m also incredibly picky about sunscreen formulas. Luckily, the Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Sun Screen SPF 30 ($36) passed my test, and I have a new favorite item to add to my skin-care routine.

The tinted product is a broad-spectrum SPF with mineral sunscreen, meaning that its ingredients physically block your skin from being hit by the sun’s rays. This is different from chemical sunscreens, which use active ingredients that absorb UV rays. This creates a chemical reaction that changes into heat, releasing it from the skin.

Many people try to avoid chemical sunscreens because they are potentially irritating to the skin, clog pores, and cause skin discoloration. However, chemical sunscreens also are typically thinner and more comfortable to wear than their physical counterparts.

The problem with physical (sometimes called mineral) sunscreens is that the main ingredient, zinc oxide, tends to leave a white cast on the skin and have a chalky formula. Somehow, Drunk Elephant has found a way around this pitfall with Umbra Tinte. The physical tinted sunscreen contains 20 percent zinc oxide but manages to have a soft texture and matte finish and is a great base for the rest of your makeup. It’s not the least bit chalky and leaves behind no white residue or strong sunscreen smell.

The product comes out of the tube a beige hue but can be blended into the skin easily and is flattering on light-medium to deep skin tones. We tested the formula on both medium-light skin and deep skin, and the sunscreen blended in flawlessly on both. The lotion gives the wearer a glowy, filtered appearance with a light amount of coverage. If you have a very light complexion, Drunk Elephant recommends its nontinted version, Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 ($34).

In addition to sun protection, the cream is also packed with antioxidants to benefit and moisturize your skin. It contains sunflower shoot extract, raspberry seed oil, and marula oil, which help moisturize and prevent premature aging.

This is a great choice for those of us who prefer more natural beauty products, and I can’t wait to replace the white-tinted sunblock in my medicine cabinet with this one.

You'll Never Skip a Day of Sunscreen Thanks to These 12 Sephora Bestsellers

We’re constantly told to slather on SPF year round to protect our skin. But many women (us included) are guilty of skipping the step because, despite its multiple benefits, traditional SPF doesn’t always wear too well on the skin. Many sunscreens have a thick consistency, which leaves your skin oily and creates a slippery canvas for makeup when applied to the face. Sunscreen also tends to leave behind an unflattering white cast, which can translate as chalky in photos (and on people of color), that alone causes most of us to nix SPF altogether.

But the bottom line is: sunscreen is essential for minimizing the risks of skin cancer, sunburn, and hyperpigmentation . So whether you’re an SPF devotee or a sunscreen skeptic, we’ve rounded up some of Sephora’s top-rated formulas so you have no more excuses when it comes to protecting your skin. These will guarantee your face is moisturized, guarded, and white-cast free!
